January 28, 2012, - ULLR - the Norse God of Snow Celebration
The purpose of Ullr is to pay homage to Ullr, and to encourage him to bless our area with abundant snow. Hosted by Great River Outfitters, Path of Life Garden and Paradise Sports. In Norse mythology Ullr (pronounced Oool-er) was the Winter God. He was the son of Sif and the stepson of Thor, the “God of Thunder.” Ullr loved the cold, snow, and delighted in traveling over the country on his skis or skates. He also delighted in the chase, and pursued his game through the Northern Forests. So, this time of year we hail Ullr hoping he will bring us a little snow (okay A LOT of snow). By what the forecasters are saying, it looks as if Ullr will be making his presence on 28 Jan 2012 this year. And to celebrate Ullr, Great River Outfitters, Path of Life Garden and Paradise Sports is hosting several events the most fun one of all is the Parade. If you want to see some crazy outfits then you need to be at Great River Outfitters, 36 Park Road Windsor, VT 05089 on Saturday, January 28th! From 1:00pm to 6:00pm Call Great River Outfitters at 802-674-9933 / 802-345-8248 www.GreatRiverOutfitters.com

Jan. 28-29, 2012 - 17th Annual Smugglers' Notch Primitive Biathlon
Seventeenth Annual Smugglers' Notch Primitive Biathlon, presented by the Smugglers' Notch Area Chamber of Commerce, and sponsored by the Vermont Trappers' Association and The Ancient Ones of Maine, will be held Saturday and Sunday, January 28th and 29th, 2012 on the grounds of the Sterling Ridge Inn and Log Cabins in Jeffersonville, Vermont. Start times are between 8:00 AM and 2:00 PM. This is the original Primitive Biathlon, and the largest such event held. Rather than the olympic-style target rifles and cross-country skis, this rather unusual event involves the use of muzzleloading rifles and snowshoes. Eligibility for overall prizes is limited to single-barrel traditional style muzzleloaders - no in-lines or optical sights - and traditional wood-framed snowshoes, although modern equipment users are welcome to participate. In the primitive spirit of the event, and in the interest of fairness, the use of round-ball ammunition is requested. Period dress is definitely encouraged, though not required. http://www.primitivebiathlon.com/

The challenge was the same as it is today—a race from the top of Mt. Mansfield, Vermont’s highest peak, to the historic village of Stowe. The ultimate test of a skiers ability. Ruschp was the winner of the first Stowe Derby. Today, the race attracts 1,000 competitors, ranging from Cross-Country Ski Team members and NCAA Champions to recreational skiers looking for a thrill. While the race can be very competitive at all levels, it is also a fun race, which keeps people coming back year after year. stowederby@teammmsc.org    www.stowederby.com  802 253 9216

July 2012

July 14-15th, 2012  Ditch Pickle Classic
Lake Champlain's Exclusive Catch-Photo-Release Tournament for the Fly Rod Angler
Missisquoi Bay on Lake Champlain, Swanton, Vermont
The tournament will start at 12pm on Saturday, 7/14 and end at 12pm on Sunday, 7/15. This will allow anglers to fish right until Sunset on Day 1 and get an early start on Day 2. Day 1 results will also be posted at the end of the day, so you'll be able to see how you stack up to the others going into Day 2.
We realize that it can be difficult to secure two days for an event like this, which is why we are providing as much notice as possible. Those of you that fished the DPC last year know that this event is not to be missed and 6 months should be enough time to secure your availability on the 14th & 15th. We are working on some options for group camping for those of you traveling from a distance, so please stay tuned. Like last year, each angler's $25 registration fee will translate into a $15 year-long membership to Friends of Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge. The remaining $10 will get each angler an official Ditch Pickle Classic t-shirt! We plan to hold the "Post Pickle BBQ" at the Refuge Headquarters on Tabor Road, just down the road from the Larry Greene Access Area.
