A Few Words about Hiking in May

This article was first published in the May 2007 issue of Vermont Sports.

This article was written by Ben Rose and Dave Hardy.

This column, Beyond the Blazes, is usually written by Jenn Karson, but she's on vacation in Arizona and the assignment has fallen onto our desks. We wanted to talk about staying off hiking trails during spring, however, Jenn wrote about that last month, so we have to come up with 600 original words on our own to fill this space. Nevertheless, we feel it is important to remind Vermont Sports readers of the need to let trails dry out. As a hiking club, one of the hardest things the Green Mountain Club has to do is discourage hiking. But until the trails are dry, that is exactly what we must do each spring. Please help keep the soil on the trails where it belongs (instead of running down the mountain into a brook) by staying off high-elevation trails until the end of May.

We provide guided hiking, bicycling, cross country skiing and snowshoeing adventures in Vermont.  We share our passion for the Green Mountain State during multi-day, guided inn-based hiking, bicycyling, snowshoeing and cross country trips. Some of our trips are van supported, providing you with the opportunity to get to the next inn under your own steam, knowing that your suitcase will be waiting for you in your room at the end of the day.  On other trips we use vans to transport guests from point to point, followed by day hikes while based in one or more of Vermont's many charming inns.  Either way, you'll have great great food, awesome scenery and exercise, and you will be able to experience the beauty of Vermont at a pace that enables you to savor it.   Each step of the way is filled with history, which we’ll share with you, along with verses from our dog-eared copy of Robert Frost’s poetry.  We also provide guided day trips, and cross country skiing lessons. In her spare time, Deborah Lewis also teaches cross country skiing to school kids at Rikert Ski Touring Center.
