November 5-6, 2011 - Birch Bark Plaiting
Using strips of Birch bark to make functional and beautiful containers of
all types. This class is 9AM-5PM Saturday and Sunday. Students are welcome to
stay Saturday night and camp on site during the program, but meals will not be
provided. The outer bark of the birch tree has been used to make baskets and
containers for thousands of years by people all over the Northern latitudes.
With its inherent flexibility and antiseptic properties, birch bark as a
wilderness or stone-age material is unrivaled for its utility for storing and
preserving things. In this class we take you from start to finish on the
creation of a plaited birch bark basket. You will: identify, locate and harvest
birch bark from the landscape; prepare and process it for weaving and create a
basket of your design using the ancient and effective plaiting technique. We
will explore several variations of plaited weaving in the styles of the ancient
Russians, Finns and Scandinavians. The weaving techniques that you will learn in
this class are applicable to a wide variety of natural materials other than
birch bark. To attend this course please download and send in a Registration

December 10 - 11, 2011 Fibers from a Wild Landscape
Humankind’s relationship to fibers and fiber technology stretches back along
our time line thousands upon thousands of years, resulting in a globally
practiced, rich, and varied tradition. In our modern age, we have access to
seemingly endless inexpensive synthetic fibers. While useful, this has reduced
our need to procure, process, and provide them for ourselves, and distanced
ourselves from the plants and animals that provide these materials. This class
invites you to return to a practice that we have relied upon for countless
generations. Come process a variety of plant and animal based fibers, gain a
better understanding of string technology from identification, processing, basic
spinning, in the hand weaving, and create some beautiful and functional works of
art. This class is 9AM-5PM Saturday and Sunday. Students are welcome to stay
Saturday night and camp on site during the program, but meals will not be
provided. To attend this course please download and send in a Registration Form,

Feb 3-6, Plymouth, Vermont - Winter S.E.R.E. TRAINING Offered
at HeadNorth
WINTER SURVIVAL, EVASION, RESISTANCE AND ESCAPE
During this 3-day, 2-nightcourse, students will be immersed in wilderness
survival that is unique to the challenges cold weather brings. For centuries,
the Native American tribes were comfortable and not just survived in these cold
harsh climates, but they thrived in the forest. Building and occupying a shelter
will be a major focus of hands on training, as it is paramount in any survival
situation. We will cover many aspects specific to winter survival; water, fire
and food; Invisible movement/evasion, camouflage, bush craft and primitive
weapons. Participants will gain understanding and confidence in very challenging
situations. Instruction on survival will be presented from a Native American
perspective, and the unique challenges of being in hostile, enemy territory. We
will cover how to live close with the earth; not dependent upon most modern
conveniences in a 65lb backpack. Nature truly has provided everything for humans
to be comfortable in nature- in any climate. At HeadNorth, you will become aware
of concentric rings, bird language, covert movement, stalking, reading the land
more effectively.
HeadNorth will emphasize critical thinking skills and extensive hands on
practice to simulate real word scenarios. We will spend one night in a primitive
snow shelter built as a team (at the participants choice). We will be based in
both our wood stove heated cabin and Barn. Participants will leave with
self-confidence, respect for themselves, their peers, and the earth. An overall
feeling that everyone around them is safer- because they are there!
