NEED A HUNTING CAMP?
Generous Champion Lands Leaseholders & Traditional Interests
Assn. (CLLTIA) members will offer their hunting camps to Vermont moose
permit winners in exchange for a donation to CLLTIA again this year. The offer
is also open to deer hunters and snowmobilers later in the year on a “camps

participating camps are generally traditional rustic camps, some of which rely
on propane lights and cooking, wood heat, primitive water systems, outhouses,
bunk style accommodations and other traditional hunting camp trappings.
The camp
owner will open and close camp for the users, and reserves the right to be
present at all times. Further details will be worked out between the camp user,

If you are a deer hunter,
you probably care a lot about how Vermont’s deer herd is managed
and you likely would help in managing the herd if you could. Now,
you have that chance - on opening weekend of the rifle season.
Vermont wildlife biologists will be operating biological deer check stations at
17 locations on opening weekend of the rifle season.
If you do get a buck,
it’s a great opportunity to get your deer weighed, aged and to have it examined
by a professional. The biological information collected will contribute to
a better understanding
of the physical condition of Vermont deer regionally, which in turn will
influence future deer management decisions.
All of the biological check stations listed below will be open from 9:00 a.m. to
6:00 p.m. on November 7 & 8:
Barre, R&L Archery;
Bennington,

The frostbite fleet has been fishing most of the winter as much of the lake
didn't freeze. They have managed to boat a few salmon and lakers. We're once
again looking forward to another great spring fishing season. Some of the best
fishing of the year starts around the 3rd week of April and it stays hot right
into July. The fish are in the top 10 feet of water and are very hungry.

Peaceable Hill is located in Vermont's Champlain Valley which has a
climate that is conducive to raising well feathered, hearty flight birds. We
pride ourselves on being Vermont's largest Pheasant Farm grower of Pheasant. Our
state of the art hatchery and rearing facility was designed and built
exclusively for raising flight game birds. Our breeding stock is selected for
correct color, size and most importantly their flight characteristics. If your
needs are Day Old Chicks, Started or Mature Pheasants, Peaceable Hill is
committed to working with you, or your club in planning, scheduling and
supplying these needs.
Our Vermont permit allows us to operate year round. Although our primary hunting
season begins in September and continues well into Winter limited only by snow
depth. The Spring season is favored by many as an ideal time to train a young
dog or keep an experienced dog tuned up. Hunts are booked as1/2 day starting as
early as 8:30a.m. with fields clear by Noon. Afternoon hunts begin at 12:30 p.m.
and end at 4:00 p.m. with the approach of dusk.
Guided and Handled Hunts: Peaceable Hill’s guides are experienced men and
woman who appreciate the interaction between hunters and good, stylish working
dogs. English Setters and Pointers are typically used for our upland hunts.
Their experience and desire to please will be the foundation of hunting tales
long told.
Non-Handled Hunts: Peaceable Hill also offers hunters with their own dog
the opportunity to participate in a traditional hunting experience. Unlike other
hunting preserves, Peaceable Hill encourages owners to hunt over their own dog.
Due to the likelihood that other activities may be taking place on the farm at
the same time, owners must take full responsibility for their dog’s behavior.

VERMONT TURKEY HUNTING
STARTS SUNDAY, MAY 1
WATERBURY, VT- Vermont has some of the best turkey hunting in New England for
the entire month of May. Last year hunters took 3,925 turkeys in the
two-day spring youth and regular May 1-31 seasons.
Vermont was the first New England state to re-establish wild turkeys when it
stocked 31 birds in 1969 and 1970. Today, the Green Mountain State has an
estimated 40,000 turkeys.
What makes Vermont’s spring gobbler season special? Vermont’s hunting is
statewide during the spring hunting season. Vermont’s turkey population is
one of the highest in New England. You can buy a turkey hunting license
without having to go through a lottery. The turkey license comes with two
spring tags for two bearded birds, and one tag for a turkey of either sex in the
fall season. Plus, you get to hunt the entire weekend because hunting is
allowed on Sundays.
Prospects for this year’s May turkey hunting season are excellent, according to
Doug Blodgett, the biologist who chairs Vermont’s turkey management team.
“We are seeing good-sized flocks of turkeys in good habitat as far north as the
Canadian Border,” said Blodgett. “Having the hunting season open
statewide is a great achievement, especially considering that this bird is on
the northern fringe of its range in North America. There is plenty of
room with a statewide season for hunters to locate good hunting areas.”
Vermont’s wild turkey restoration program is a tremendous wildlife management
success story funded entirely by hunters through the sale of
hunting licenses and a federal tax on hunting equipment. Now, hunters are
reaping the benefits by seeing excellent turkey hunting in Vermont. And,
all Vermonters are enjoying watching the big birds as they roam hillsides they
had been absent from for almost a century.
To find out more about wild turkey hunting in Vermont, contact the Vermont Fish
& Wildlife Department, 103 South Main Street, Waterbury, VT
05601-0501. Telephone them at 802-241-3700 or check in at their website (www.vtfishandwildlife.com).
The 2004 Turkey Harvest Summary with the
number of turkeys taken in each town is posted under “Hunting and Trapping” -
“Big Game.” Licenses are available on their website and at more
than 350 agents statewide.
