Friends and Members of VOGA,

Here we go, foliage season and hunting season overlapping and winter on the way.  Fishing, paddle sports, biking, hiking and more activities are still going strong so there isn't much time to dally.

On top of all of this at VOGA, we are buttoning up the basement of the new office for winter and working on the new website. I hope that everyone is as busy as you want to be. Here are a few notes of importance.

* Making Release Forms Legally Binding in Vermont
Once again, VOGA will be proposing legislation to make release forms legally binding. This is NOT an attempt to get rid of the need for insurance. This IS an effort to get the State of Vermont up to speed with other states who have already created a higher level of protection for their recreation professionals. If you are not already on our email list for this effort and would like to be involved, let me know. info@voga.org

* VOGA Certifichecks - Gift Certificates
VOGA Gift Certificates (Certifichecks) will be in circulation during the coming seasons. They can be used at face value just like checks. Please tell your staff to be on the lookout for them and if you have any questions, please call our office at 800-425-8747.

* All Sports Expo, Oct. 11-12, 2008
Booths are going fast for the All Sports Recreation and Fitness Expo and we can save our members some cash when you register. See more information below.

* Vermont Outdoors Woman, Doe Camp Sponsors
Many thanks to all of our 2008 sponsors. Your support makes our programming possible.

Vermont's most popular outdoor training program is seeking sponsors for our 2009 programs. Thousands of women will visit our Doe Camp pages in the coming year and we'd love to promote your services and products to them. Contact Hilary Hess at vow@voga.org or visit: Vermont Outdoors Woman

There is never a bad time to form partnerships between lodging and recreation professionals. Please welcome our new members and visit our online directory to expand your offerings through partnering.

Have fun and be safe out there,

Gray

Deadline for Watershed Grants is November 14
WATERBURY, VT - Applications are available for the 2009 Vermont Watershed Grants Program to fund projects that help Vermonters protect, restore and enjoy the state's watersheds.  Applications are due to the Vermont Watershed Grants office by Friday, November 14.
"Watershed Grants are available to municipalities, local or regional governmental agencies, nonprofit organizations, and citizen groups," said Rick Hopkins of the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation (VTDEC).  "Watershed Grants can be awarded for many types of watershed projects, including those that protect or restore water quality, shorelines, or fish and wildlife habitats."
"We also fund projects that monitor water quality or fish and wildlife populations, improve recreational use of watersheds, educate people about watersheds, or identify historic and cultural resources," added Hopkins. "The work can be done on public or private lands."
Rod Wentworth of the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department (VTFWD) explained the watershed grants provide a way for local people to make a difference.
Vermont Watershed Grants is a joint project of the VTFWD and VTDEC.  It is funded by Vermont Conservation License Plate sales.  The program has funded 230 watershed projects statewide since 1998.
"When Vermonters purchase a Conservation License Plate they're helping protect clean water as well as conserving wildlife and important habitats for future generations," said Fish & Wildlife Commissioner Wayne Laroche.  "Proceeds from the sale of Conservation License Plates fund the Watershed Grants program and help support the Fish & Wildlife Department's Nongame Wildlife Fund."
The Watershed Grants application guide and application forms are available on the web at: www.anr.state.vt.us/dec/waterq/lakes/htm/lp_watershedgrants.htm or by calling VTDEC Water Quality Division at 802-241-3769.
Applications for the Vermont Conservation License Plate are available on the Fish & Wildlife website: www.vtfishandwildlife.com/support_plates.cfm  or by calling 802-241-3709.

October 4th, 2008 Staetwide - Archery Season Begins - Deer
White-tailed deer are one of the most studied and talked about species in the state. The importance Vermonters place on deer is evident in looking at the state seal. It is a deer, not an eagle or other mythical creature that sits atop the state seal! In Vermont, deer are found in the mountains, river valleys, agricultural lands, and even in backyard suburbs! October 7th - Becoming A Hunter Education Instructor in Vermont
North Country Sportsman's Club, This is NOT a hunter's education program.  This IS a class to become a certified instructor, a person who wants to share their love and experience of hunting with others.  Approximately 5,000 students participate in the Vermont Hunter Education Program annually. As a result, the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department is always looking for volunteer instructors. The work is demanding, the pay is lousy, and the hours are often long and inconvenient. Instructors love their work not because of any material rewards or benefits, but because they know they are contributing in some small way to the future of hunting and trapping. Dayle Vance Goad, Certified Let's Go Fishing Instructor, email:  vtmoonlight@gmail.com Phone: 802-355-5714  From the State of Vermont's site (http://www.vtfishandwildlife.com/edu_hunter.cfm#instructors):
