Vermont has five state run hatcheries and two federally run, each with its own unique characteristics. Vermont started raising fish in 1891. The oldest hatchery is in Roxbury, built in 1890-91. The newest hatchery was built in 1991 in Grand Isle. The department's hatchery system produces almost a million fish annually. Additionally, our National hatcheries produce millions of fish annually.
