September 7, 2024, Montpelier River Cleanup
September is Vermont River Clean-up Month, and Friends of the Winooski has been pulling trash from the rivers at several sites in and around Montpelier for 25 years. We would love your help! The reasons we clean up in September are because the water level is usually fairly low, and the water temperature is about as warm as it gets. These factors help our volunteers be safer and more comfortable in the river. We use canoes to collect garbage from the river. If you have an old sturdy boat that you don't mind filling with tires and scrap metal and mud, we'd love to use it. Please come prepared to get dirty! Wear appropriate clothing, including shoes that can be worn in the river; bring a snack and water, gloves are recommended, and protection from sun or rain. Note that the river access spots and river beds can be steep, extremely slippery, rocky, and uneven. The event takes place the first Saturday after Labor Day, each year. Meet at Montpelier City Hall, 39 Main St., Montpelier, at 8:30am. https://winooskiriver.org/river-clean-up

October 13, 2024, East Charlotte Tractor Parade
Mother Nature and Tropical Storm Philippe are conspiring against us and we will NOT be having a parade this year. The 1.5 to 2.5 inches of rain currently forecasted to arrive between Saturday and Sunday means that ground that is just getting dry from the summer's deluges will again have the potential to be water logged. Given that we rely on local farmers' kindness in sharing their hay fields with us, both for spectator parking and for parade staging, we cannot in good conscience ask them to put their next year's crops in danger. This is the first time we have had to cancel a parade due to the weather, and hopefully the last. You can put October 13, 2024 on your calendar now! We will be back, better, and hopefully drier, than ever then. https://www.facebook.com/events/661554672403172/
October 13, 2024: Shelter Craft for Emergencies
Monkton, VT - 9 - 5 pm - Shelters are a primary survival tool with a wide variety of styles and building techniques depending on the environment and resources available. They are a survivors' second line of defense, and basic knot craft is a natural pairing with shelters. Building and living/staying in shelters can also be a lot of fun! Concepts that we can look into based on folk's interests are: snow shelters such as a fighter trench, quinzee, igloo, or snow cave; jungle shelters like platforms and methods to stay dry and insect free; mountain shelters for various seasons such as various types of A-frames, lean-tos, immediate action versus long term shelters; improvised abodes for coastal and tundra environments; concepts for hot/desert conditions; safe site selection; living considerations; insulation beds to be more comfortable and off the ground; how to use hot rocks and coal beds in chilly conditions; natural versus man-made shelters; debris huts; and knots, hitches, and lashings specifically useful in shelter building. This class can be modified for children 10 years old to the elderly, and those with handicaps of many types. Class cost: $150.00. https://bookings.owlsskills.com/en

October 19-20, 2024: Practical Fire Craft
Monkton, VT - 9-7 Saturday, 9-5 Sunday - Fire is the “sexy” and “cool” survival skill that draws our attention. “One channel, everyone watches!” An extremely useful tool, fire is a skill that can be very difficult, especially if a survivor is hurt, inexperienced, or dealing with wet conditions. In this two-day course we explore approaches for: finding and gathering various types of fuel; preparing fuels by breaking them down (or up!) into stages; the fire triangle and how to modify fire lays (how to put fuel/wood on a fire) to fit form to function; ignition styles and concepts; finding and preparing tinder in various environments and conditions; a multitude of different uses; and how to bank a fire (keeping a fire going overnight so you don't have to start from scratch in the morning). October 20, 2024, Trapp Lodge Mountain Marathon
Event by Ironwood Adventure Works @ Trapp Family Lodge - A challenging half and full marathon distance trail run in the heart of the Green Mountains at beautiful Trapp Family Lodge. Fall is the best time to visit Vermont and we think that running through crisp, colorful, fall foliage on the Trapp Lodge trail system is just the way to do it. October is a particularly special time to be in Stowe, winter is just around the corner and Oktoberfest is in full swing in and around town. This race will challenge you! Although Trapp lodge has some of the smoothest, most runnable trail around for running, they also boast some incredible single track. Steep climbs and descents and a newly updated climb to the highest point on the Trapp Lodge Property; Round Top Mountain! The 13.1 mile loop course is approximately 2/3 double track wide trails and dirt roads, and 1/3 serpentine, rugged single track. Full marathon racers will traverse this loop twice. This is a challenging trail race with significant elevation gain and loss and some steep scrambling segments. https://ultrasignup.com/register.aspx?did=109996
