Skating Rinks, Arenas, and Wild Ice Skating Trails
Ice skating in Vermont is a natural. Growing up here, we take for granted that come winter, ice skating will be available somewhere close by and so it is today. With indoor skating rinks, arenas, community rinks and wild ice skating trails on our lakes and ponds, there are ample opportunities to lace up and hit the ice. Here's a list of indoor skating rinks.

Ice Skating Safety
Ice skating is a fun winter activity, and also a great exercise! The National Safety Council offers these tips to help you and your family enjoy safe skating.
- Wear skates that fit comfortably and provide enough ankle support to keep you on your feet.
- Have the blades professionally sharpened at the beginning of each season.
- Skate only on specially prepared skating areas where you are sure the ice is strong enough to withstand your weight.
- Always check for cracks, holes and other debris.
- Before setting out on your skating expedition, learn basic skating skills, such as how to stop and fall safely.
- Wear warm clothing and rest when you become tired or cold.
- Never skate alone.
Wild Ice Skating Safety

- Ice-testing poles. They should have sharp enough tips and strong enough shafts to withstand the impact of ramming straight down into the ice without shattering. "For Nordic skaters, these double as propulsion so you don't have to do all the work with your legs," says Hess.
- Self-rescue equipment. These are typically ice "claws," as you won't be able to grip the slippery ice with your hands should you fall through the surface.
- A pro bag, or Nordic lifeline. It's essentially a small bag containing a 75- to 80-foot rope that skaters can use to rescue someone else without breaking through the ice themselves.
- A backpack with a change of clothes. This can also help maintain flotation if you fall into the water.
